Our country ambassador for Bulgaria, J.M, shared with us some insights so that we will visit the country as travellers not just tourists. Here they are!
"Bulgaria is a jewel in the South East Europe landscape. A land of forests and mountains wide plains where anything grows. When you can’t swim, then you can ski – and vice versa. It is a country the same size of England but with the population density of Scotland. Warm long summers, and cold winters. Friendly people and low-cost living. On a must-see list I would include:
Sofia; recent development of the Metro have exposed much of the ancient Roman city of Serdica which have been tastefully absorbed into the project. This complements the very many established archeological and other ancient features.
The Black Sea resorts; not as sophisticated as in our Southern neighbour Greece but with global warming well established the temperatures are comfortable there in the torrid months of July and August.
The ski resorts; Borovets, Bansko and Pamporovo are the major ones. Again not as sophisticated as in European countries to the North of usbut have a character of their own. Prices are reasonable compared to elsewhere (but not the bargains that they used to be). These are also grat summer resorts for walking tours.
Rila Monastery; on the highway between Sofia and Greece, a stunning building with amazing artwork and architecture. One of the places where Bulgarian culture and heritage was preserved during the 500 years of Turkish occupation.
Koprivshtitsa; a remarkable working museum village which is a time capsule from the mid-19th century"
Along the places come people. That's why we have prepared a culture guide of Bulgaria, with some tips on how to behaviour to these wonderful people.
Check it out here.
